Why More Older Men Are Suffering From Urinary Tract Infections – Expert Reveals

Kehinde Tijani, a medical expert has urged older men to take better care of their prostate health to prevent other health complications, according to The PUNCH.

The expert, a Professor of Surgery, noted that the poor state of prostate health is a major reason for the increasing incidence of urinary tract infections among older men.

Recall that it was recently reported that 75-year-old former president of the US, Bill Clinton was hospitalised at the University of California, Irvine Medical Centre, due to a urinary tract infection.

According to reports, an aide to the former president confirmed that he had a urological infection that spread to his bloodstream but was on the mend.

Recall also that after a few days at the hospital, Clinton was discharged and, in a video, said, he was on the road to recovery.

Though UTIs are more common in women, Tijani, who is also a consultant urologist, said men also suffer from this infection.

According to the consultant urologist, while cases of UTI are rare among young men, it is quite prevalent in men from 50 years of age. This, he said, is due to the state of the prostate.

Speaking with PUNCH HealthWise, Professor Tijani said, “UTI is more common in women than men because the urethra is closer to the anus in women than in men. So, because most UTIs usually come from the anus, that is the major thing. But, yes, men have it but it is not common.

“It becomes more common in men as they become elderly from the 50s and 60s because of the prostate but generally young men rarely have it unless there is an underlying cause.”

He explained that the reason why older men are prone to UTIs is because of the inability of urine to flow freely through the prostate.

Using an analogy, the professor said, “If you have a gutter that is flowing very well, things will not grow in it but if the gutter is stationary and something blocks it, things will start growing in that gutter. That is the same thing with the urinary tract in men.

“So, when they have a prostate enlargement that is slowing down the urine or there’s any problem that is slowing down the urine, this may lead to urinary tract infection.

“That is the reason why, as men get older, their prostate starts getting enlarged and the release of the urine becomes slower, then they are more prone to UTIs.”

He noted that UTI can be easily treated with an antibiotic, stressing however that it is very important to find and treat the cause of the infection first.

Speaking on the symptoms that may indicate the presence of UTI in a man, Tijani said the commonest ones are feverish feeling, burning sensation, and frequency in urination.

He added that some people may see pus, while others may also see blood.

He however warned that once a man sees blood in his urine, it is a sign of a more serious issue, noting that such a person must urgently seek medical attention.

 Driving in the rain

There is no doubt that rainfall is very essential to all, particularly to the farmer and those in hot and dry environment, because apart from being a needed resource, it fills rivers, provides fresh water, cools the weather and sustains the ecosystem.

But when it is heavier than a drizzle, rainfall is dreaded by every motorist, because it makes driving more tasking, and in some cases, poses a potential threat when excessive downpour leads to flash flooding. That is when motoring is not just risky, but very dangerous!


Driving your vehicle in the rain can be very challenging, which explains why rainy conditions account for very high accident rates in all parts of the world. With this reality in mind, every year, as the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issue rain and flood forecasts. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) also makes it a duty to enlighten motorists and other road users with tips on how to stay safe in the rain.

According the FRSC, because visibility is reduced and the road wet, motorists must ensure that before even taking their vehicles out in the first place, they should ensure that they are in good motoring condition: That the headlights, wipers, and brake are functional, and the tyres not balding or worn out in order to enable adequate grip during braking (as the road surface is likely to be slippery when wet).


Beyond taking care that all is well mechanically, the human factor should not be taken for granted:  Defensive driving is needed in all motoring conditions, but most useful when it is raining. And the first rule for every self-disciplined driver when it starts raining is to avoid excessive speed. The slower the vehicle is, the more likely you are able to be in control.


The Corps’ Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, confirmed this, advising all motorists to apply “common sense speed limit” in a rainy weather.

Kazeem, an Assistant Corps Marshal, gave these tips to drivers: “First of all, before embarking on a journey during the rainy season, one should ensure that the windows and windshields are clean on the outside and the inside.  It is pertinent to routinely check the headlights, brake lights, turn signals and tail lights.

“The windshield wiper and blades should also be checked for proper functioning. The lights should be on during the day and at night, whenever rain starts dropping.  Motorists are also advised to reduce their speed during this time and apply the “common sense speed limit”.

The Corps’ Public Education Officer also spoke on slippery road surface and the need for good tyres: “Because the road surface is often slippery, drivers are also admonished to ensure that their tyres have adequate traction. The traction is the resistance between the tyre and the ground.


“As such, it is dangerous to use worn-out tyres during the rainy season because the tread patterns are faded and friction is reduced, thereby leaving the car with less traction. And a car without proper traction is a potential tragedy to the road.”

He described vehicle tyres as being amongst the most crucial elements, and the only part that touches the road, which is why the tyre traction is the grip of the vehicle on the road and it is very, very essential.

Other essential guides by road safety experts towards safe motoring in the rain include:


•Ensuring that taillights, brake lights and turn signals are properly functioning so other drivers will see your vehicle during downpours.


•If you are not yet out in the rain, wait until the weather improves, if possible If you feel uncomfortable driving in the rain and can postpone your trip or go by public transport service, wait until the weather improves before driving.


•Take a good look at the tread of your vehicle’s tyres. Worn-out tyres can severely reduce traction on wet road. Watch out for obstructions, like broken down vehicles, accident scenes, fallen trees, which you may suddenly come upon, due to (poor visibility).

•You should slow down, avoid hard braking or turning sharply and drive in the tracks of the vehicle ahead of you. This will help to avoid aquaplaning or hydroplaning  –  a challenging condition where water causes the vehicle’s tyres to lose contact with the road surface leading to loss of control.


Generally, the first rule is, always keep your vehicle in good condition. If it is about to rain, but you are still at home or at work, tarry awhile for the weather to get better, if possible. Before driving in the rain, double check the vehicle’s vital equipment to ensure they will still function properly when needed.

The check list must include headlamps, rear lights, and wipers. And, if all is okay with the vehicle, when you encounter the rain, it behoves you to reduce speed and deploy what the FRSC calls “defensive driving.”

Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives. 


HANGOVERS

One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady. 


ULCERS: 

The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach. 


TEMPERATURE CONTROL: 

Many other cultures see bananas as a 'cooling' fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature. 

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. I have experienced first hand, the struggles of an unhealthy lifestyle. I didn't feel good about myself early in life. I was sexually abused and overweight in childhood. By the time I was 18 years old, I had physical problems – colon problems due to stress. I  would gain my worth and value through work, and had migraines and problems with my monthly cycle. In my late 30s, I had breast cancer. Even when I started Ministry, I was not taking care of myself properly. During this time, I didn't understand why God wasn't protecting my health. I was breaking God's laws of health and rest and He wasn't giving me a special pass that excused me from reaping what I was sowing. One day, I stumbled upon a  nutrition book that changed the course of my life. It helped me get on the path to health. I decided to take steps to take care of myself mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. 


I was struggling to lose weight. I tried everything from dieting to getting help from my doctor, but nothing seemed to work. I took this problem to God and He told me to eat the necessary foods and exercise regularly. One of the foundations of true health is having a relationship with God, who is able to guide you and tell you what to do but the part where people seem to struggle is waiting for God to do the things he has guided them to do. God will not do what you are supposed to do by yourself. With this understanding, I got to work and started exercising to lose weight, taking vitamins, got a personal trainer and practised mindful eating. Being able to exercise regularly made me feel good about myself; I  became more effective in Ministry. I was no longer sluggish, was smarter, lighter, can go for hours preaching and praying,  thinking clearly and taking care of others. From my experience, I  decided that people needed to adopt this lifestyle because their lives would be better and they would be able to serve God effectively. I began to write books on health and preach about it. 


Eating healthy and exercising affects spiritual health. Jesus did not come for a part of us, he came to restore the whole entire being. I Thessalonians 5:23. Most of the times we think we should do whatever we wish with our bodies. 1 Corinthians 6:19 When you don't feel good, it is easier to get angry, harder to pray and hear from God. To think our bodies do not affect our spiritual being is totally wrong. Sometimes, we ask God to heal us from that disease but all we need to do is practice exercising and eating right. A lot of times when God does something, he gives us what to do as well but we miss that part and expect God to do everything for us. It takes a lot of energy to do Ministry and serve God effectively. To do the study, travelling, taking care of people and so on.

In January 2016, I prayed to God to give me more energy and shortly after that, I got a desire to start walking for exercise. In the last 6 months, I have walked  950 miles and lost 17 pounds. It is usually a great time to pray and be by myself and it takes me an hour and a half but it is an investment in my future and the call of God upon my life. I feel so much better and look better but God didn't just zap me with energy. I had to play my part. You might feel good now but you will get older. If you don't start exercising and eating right, you are spending tomorrow's health. You are using up today what you might not have tomorrow and then you will say "I wish I could have", but then it will be too late. You need to exercise, move more like taking the stairs instead of the elevator. People are too convenience oriented. Take care of yourself. Invest in yourself. I have a personal trainer that comes to take me 2-3 times per week, I get adequate sleep, drink lots of water, take daily vitamins and exercise daily even when my personal trainer is not with me. 


We need to do the best with what God has given us. God cares about your internal spirit, and looking nice is a reflection of a happy, healthy internal state.I believe that we can overcome certain illnesses by doing simple things like eating right, getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, and exercising. You cannot serve God effectively without taking care of your body.
